feedback on SEAFOOD PROGRESS

“It is organizations such as SeaChoice that bring awareness to the public about improper harvesting in the seas. The information you provide has allowed me to make choices about my seafood purchases that align with my beliefs. Keep at it.” – Maureen Harper, Alberta, Canada.
“SeaChoice is the absolute necessary service communication bridge between fisheries, industry and consumers. Having this organization is crucial to filling the large communication gap between the government and the entire supply chain.” – Michael-Ann Rowe, New York, USA.

“Industry has a role to play in meaningfully elevating and incorporating worker voice by exerting pressure to support freedom of association and collective bargaining all the way up the supply chain. By relying on thoughtful and measurable indicators, Seafood Progress is moving the industry forward into more socially responsible practices.” – FishWise’s RISE case study
“My name is James Mitchell, and from 2013-2018 I was involved in Greenpeace USA’s Carting Away the Oceans report series, which had an enormous impact on shifting the U.S. grocery retail sector towards a heightened focus on sustainable sourcing, private label product development (such as affordable, responsibly-caught tuna), and greater transparency on human rights concerns across the often opaque seafood supply chain. It was fascinating to see the early lead taken by a few retailers who welcomed the opportunity to demonstrate their dedication to this issue, and inspiring to see how prior laggards would then get into shape to compete in this unique race-to-the-top scenario. Most, if not all retailers profiled would have made minimal to no effort in the absence of shining this valuable spotlight, and some seafood procurement officers privately told us that they loved the competition and wanted us to keep doing it every year. Finally, consumers really got behind the effort to express that they expect responsibly caught and harvested seafood when they shop at their preferred grocery store – or else they will take their business elsewhere. I’m thrilled that Seafood Progress is here to build upon the spirit and success of CATO and take it to the next level.” – James Mitchell, Don’t Cage our Oceans (former employee of Greenpeace USA).
“Seafood Progress is instrumental in helping to push retailers across Canada to responsibly report out to consumers their commitment to sustainable seafood. Working through the Seafood Progress reporting requirements with our retailers helps cement this commitment to ensure the oceans are healthy and flourishing for decades to come. As our understanding of metrics and sustainability in seafood continues to evolve, so too has SP, ensuring it keeps pace with the speed of business to ensure retailers are not only crafting better responsible sourcing commitments, but also are adhering to them and improving their performance year over year.” – Ocean Wise
